Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of pitch

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted just a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.
