"When are you speaking to the band?" an inquiry arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only a single issue: I also wants to be Haim's fourth member. Furthermore, we are not alone. A host of high-profile fans have openly begged for the position.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy contenders.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a close unit. Their videos often show them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such unfettered joy you inevitably think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans told us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage people to make music."

"So anyone gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Milestone

The trio are speaking from home, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant milestone," continues Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The album was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The words follow endings and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them determining in real life who they want to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That recent toughness demanded a new sound – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's openness fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their personal misadventures.

Someone left Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an global following.

But the sister act will always be their top focus.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
