RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages leading to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.
British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."
